On March 18, 2025, at approximately 11:40 AM, an error occurred in the Korea Exchange (KRX) system, causing a five-minute suspension of stock trading.
As a result, the order book on securities firms' home trading systems (HTS) froze, making all transactions temporarily impossible.
While most trades have now been restored, trading for certain stocks, such as Dongyang Steel Pipe, remains suspended.
Why did this happen?
The incident appears to have been caused by a technical issue in the Korea Exchange's trading system.
Industry insiders point out that the halt affected all securities firms uniformly, indicating that the root cause lies within the KRX system.
However, the KRX is still investigating the exact cause and further announcements are awaited.
Can investors receive compensation?
Investors are keenly interested in whether compensation will be provided for losses incurred due to missed buy and sell opportunities during the outage.
Historically, compensation for losses stemming from technical errors has been rare.
This is because system outages do not directly target specific investors.
Therefore, it seems unlikely that compensation will be provided in this case as well.
Will measures be taken to prevent recurrence?
The KRX has stated that it will use this incident as an opportunity to enhance system stability.
However, specific measures have not yet been disclosed.
Regular inspections and the establishment of emergency recovery systems are likely to be necessary moving forward.
This incident raises concerns about the stability of KRX's core infrastructure in South Korea's stock market and underscores the urgent need for measures to protect investors and restore trust.
Were other stocks affected?
While most trades have returned to normal, trading for certain stocks, such as Dongyang Steel Pipe, remains suspended.
Investors in these specific stocks are likely experiencing additional inconveniences.
How did this affect investors?
In highly volatile markets, even a few minutes of trading suspension can result in significant losses.
This can be particularly detrimental to short-term traders.
How does this compare to global cases?
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has also experienced past incidents where trading was halted for hours due to technical issues.
Such incidents often led to large-scale technical reviews and improvements, which the KRX should consider as well.
In conclusion
This incident serves as more than just a technical error; it highlights the need to reevaluate financial IT infrastructure and market trust.
While compensation remains uncertain, concrete measures to prevent recurrence must be announced.
